How did you fall in love with the new Challenger?

There’s a thread on Challengertalk asking for feedback on how you fell in love with the new Challenger. One of our members posted a great write-up. I’ll provide it here for other members to enjoy. What’s your story? Please submit your story to me via email or PM on Challengertalk and I will post it here on the forum.

UPDATE: Ottopilot has agreed to write monthly articles and tech tips for the website. Thanks Gary!

How I fell in love with the new Challenger
by Ottopilot

I have a work friend who is Mopar-or-no-car; we were in LA traveling, eating at a Chinese restaurant. His fortune said “Quit procrastinating, buy that car and take a trip today”. To show me what it meant, we walked down the street from the restaurant to the Dodge dealer. They had four Challenger SRT8s in the lot. It was instant infatuation. A real live brand new muscle car was there in front of me. I never thought I would see that again in my lifetime.

Back at work, I looked up information on the 2010 models and found that PCP was an optional color. The infatuation turned to love. I couldn’t find any within 500 miles, so I went with a broker who found one in Illinois.

With a rebate, $2k mopar bucks, and no down payment–how could anyone say no?

I’m driving it today. And that $860 payment only serves to remind me every month how luck I am to live in this society.

And that Chinese fortune that started it all? Turns out that was really my fortune! The cookies just got swapped.

EVENT WRITE-UP

Thanks out to everyone who made the event. We had 15 people at Cassetta’s which is a great turnout. Tonight was first time I met Smokepedal, Moparblue and Tireburner. It’s pretty cool when you can bring people together that have never met before and launch into such dynamic conversation about our cars, what we do to them and what we do with them. I like seeing the club grow and new friends being made. Wish I had more time to spend with everybody. The night was over before I knew what happened. Already looking forward to the next event.

If you have pics from the event or can contribute some comments, please send via email or PM on Challengertalk.

MnChallengers – Todd Wilson’s Challenger Build

MnChallengers – Todd Wilson’s Challenger Build

One of our club members decided to take the gloves off and build a rocket ship out of his Challenger. Todd Wilson shared some info on the build a while back on Challengertalk. Below is a more personal take on how he got here. Great write-up Todd. Thanks for sharing.

Challenger Build
by Todd Wilson

It’s very difficult for me to do a write up on myself but I’ll give it my best.

I’ve always enjoyed the thrill of racing. When I was younger I would attend Brainard International Raceway to simply watch my uncle drag race his 1968 Camaro. Once I got my license the thrill of going fast became a reality. Back in the later part of the 70’s my buddies would get together for Saturday night racing. We had a few locations that saw relatively no traffic and worked perfect for a 1/4 mile drag. My first muscle car was a 1970 Dodge Charger, my second a 1966 Dodge Coronet, and my third a 1972 Dodge Challenger. All of these cars had the reliable 318 motor with the automatic torqueflite transmission. I’ve always preferred Mopars. I’m mechanically inclined but would never consider myself a “motor head”. One thing that I have been good at is driving. I never took any of my vehicles to a drag track as I was some what intimidated with the vehicles that attended these tracks. As I grew older my priorities changed so the racing was placed on the back burner. When Dodge announced they were bringing back the Charger I was totally stoked at the idea and could not wait to possibly purchase the car. Once I saw the car, I was very disappointed with the route Dodge chose to go with respect to the looks of the vehicle. As we all know, it looks nothing like the true Charger. My dream of once again owning a Muscle car was squashed. Dodge obviously took a lot of heat with the Charger and knew there was a viable market in getting back into the Muscle car market. When they announced the Challenger I was hesitant but also intrigued with the idea. Once I saw the car I was sold. It took a lot of convincing to get the wife to buy into my dream but as I told her…..I spent the majority of my life doing everything that was expected of me from a family and career perspective. I worked hard at my business, planned for our retirement, raised (raising) four children and made the typical sacrifices that a parent must make. It was time to fill one of my everlasting dreams. I ordered and purchased my 2009 Challenger SRT in March of 09. For obvious reasons it sat parked in the garage for the next 2 months.

Once I started driving I decided that I wanted more speed, more muscle sound, etc. The modifications started as soon as I had the extra money saved. I started by adding a SMS twin screw super charger, Eibach suspension system, Magnaflow exhaust upgrade, wheels and tires, etc. The car was tuned giving me about 577 RWHP which was a significant improvement.

I still felt my car was not ready to go to the track and compete at a level that I wanted to. This past fall I started putting together a custom build using a few national race car builder’s recommendations. It took three months to get my final paper build completed. The next step was to submit the build to three reputable builders. When all was said and done I ended up selecting Arrington Engines (shophemi.com) as the builder of my car. I an a close friend are transporting my car to Virginia leaving on Monday January 17, 2011. The build will take about 4-6 weeks and upon completion the car will be shipped back to me. Arrington is taking a lot of pride with this build and with one of my concerns, gave me a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. If something goes wrong they have agreed to either come to Minnesota to repair it or take responsibility in getting the car to them. All in all I’m excited and nervous. The excitement is the build. The nervousness comes when it’s time to take it to the track. My final build sheet is attached.

One last thing……I want to thank all MnChallenger members for taking an interest in my project. I want to give a special thank you to Steve Benson as he helped me locate an enclosed car hauler to use in transporting the vehicle to Virginia. I’ve requested Arrington to do a photo portfolio of the build and a video of the dyno pulls so that I can share this information with those that are interested.

The list for my build is as follows:

MnChallengers – Winter Party – Jan 2011

We had yet another great turnout for our club meet today. There were 16-18 members on hand for the meet. We covered events for 2011, talked financials and hung out as friends. After club business everyone order food. My mushroom & swiss burger combined with a 22oz root beer in an iced “boot” was fantastic. After some great food and shop talk it was time to head up the street to Pro-Kart. I’ve been to the facility a few times but have never raced the carts. At first glance, the $20 price to race for 8-minutes looks too expensive. Big mistake. I had been missing out on some serious fun. I’m hooked. We burned off the adrenaline afterwards talking about the race while a large group gathered in the facility. The crowd got real loud when one of the groups crew showed up in a full race suit covered in advertising. It was quite a site. That group had rented the track for an hour. Cool. A few of us chatted in the lot for another 15 minutes before heading home.

Great event guys. Thanks to all for coming out. Our next event is Thursday February 3rd for garage party in Lonsdale. Next meet after that will be Cassetta’s in Saint Paul on February 26th. Looking forward to seeing you guys.
